As the world wakes up to the devastating impacts of plastic waste, particularly in our oceans, efforts to reduce plastic waste and increase recycling are redoubling at all levels of society. At the forefront of these efforts is a small team from Cornwall, who have created a reusable coffee cup which both reduces plastic waste and improves plastic recycling!
The rCup is the world’s first reusable coffee cup made from recycled paper coffee cups, which are difficult to recycle due to their plastic lining. This innovative reusable coffee cup is coming to the UK this Spring. And, having been invited to participate as product testers during the development phase of this cup, we are delighted to announce rCups will soon be available for sale through the Spiller & Tait website.
Made by award-winning Cornwall design company ashortwalk, rCUP is BPA free, dishwasher safe, leak proof and designed for a 10+ years’ lifetime. The outer sleeve of each rCup is made from six coffee cups, and features a screw-top lid to keep hot drinks secure. The reusable cups, which themselves can be recycled, are fully insulated and will keep drinks warm for over an hour.
rCUP is the brainchild of former Dyson designer Dan Dicker and a team of specialist recycling experts who set out on a mission to create the best reusable cup on the market today.
Based on the “nothing is truly recycled until it’s reused” ethos, ashortwalk’s first step was to find a way to recycle the tonnes of paper coffee cups being thrown away every day in the UK. The second was to evaluate and improve on the functionality of existing travel mugs, to ensure we use them more often. Their ultimate aim is to completely eliminate single use cups through the use of reusables. We feel they are making great strides in this direction with the launch of this highly practical cup, which also has amazing sustainable credentials. And, we are delighted to have played a small part in that journey by testing prototypes of the cup and providing our feedback.
